PROJECT: A rare chance to experience the excitement and power of the underground street dance culture of "Flex." Flex is an East Brooklyn-born dance movement made up of many unique styles. You will be introduced to the gravity defying Gliders, the hyper-flexible Bone Breakers, the Hat Trick masters, Punchlines, Pausing and more with both legends and new stars from the scene. Don't miss this chance to experience Flex raw and from the streets in their first public stage performance with Juilliard faculty member Jerome Begin and electro-cellist Chrissy Lancaster of Tranimal backing them with their quirky eccentric blend of beats bleeps and strings. These performers and musicians were brought together during the filming of the forthcoming feature documentary Flex is Kings which follows the lives of these incredible artists struggling in the impoverished neighborhoods of East Brooklyn, with an original score by Tranimal.
ABOUT: A collaboration between three entities:
Flex is Kings - documentary film makers and organizers Deidre Shoo and Mike Nichols Tranimal - musicians and organizers Chrissy Lancaster and Jerome Beginand
Flex Dancers - about 12-20 dancers of various styles from East Brooklyn
Tranimal is extreme cello hopping into bed with synthesizers, electronics and beats. It has been the dream of long time friends and composers Jerome Begin and Chrissy Lancaster to start a band. Jerome and Chris are devout improvisors and lovers of technology. Tranimal music often originates from musical and technological challenges they create for themselves, which bears strange musical fruit.
